Push Pull

When it comes to work, the outdoors is both an ally and adversary. In the struggle with time and production, my focus has always been tested by the pull of being outside, in nature, active, and usually working up a sweat.

As the years click by, days seem to shorten and energy fades, accentuating this lifelong dilemma. A quick mid-day ski or bike ride makes a more significant impact on my workday than I remember. There’s no question I feel better after “recess”, and I always find inspiration just being out there, but what about the work? Would I have been more prolific? Would I be recognized?

When I see the focus and commitment other working artists have, or had, I’m always impressed, and a bit envious, of their discipline while mountains, rivers, oceans, lakes, and trails scream “come out and play!”.

I realize not everyone stares out the window in anticipation of a quick run through the woods or a ride down a dusty trail, and access to outdoor recreation can be a challenge for some. Regardless, I suspect I’m not alone in this battle with the clock. Many of us, and certainly those with interests similar to mine, wrestle with the push-pull of daily life; in search of that perfect balance between a successful career and physical activity.

Do I have regrets? Sure, who doesn’t. Will I ever change my priorities? Probably not. But one thing is certain; I’m grateful to still have the ability and motivation to get outdoors, and to create art.
